Vitamins

Research has shown that nutrition plays an important role in eye health. Anti-oxidant vitamins, such as A, C and E are responsible for maintaining healthy cells and tissues in the eye. These vitamins can be found in many different sources of fruit and vegetables such as oranges, dried apricots, peppers, tomatoes and particularly in green leafy vegetables. They can also be found in nuts, seeds, dairy products and eggs.

Vitamin B complex is essential to the maintenance of optic nerve function. The retina contains one of the highest concentrations of zinc, which is necessary for visual pigments.

It has also been shown that the anti-oxidants Lutein (Loo-teen) and Zeaxanthin (Zaya-zan-thin), may also help with eye health which has been damaged over the years by sunlight smoke and pollution. These are found naturally in the retina and can be provided from green leafy vegetables such as Kale and spinach and sweet peppers.

However not all our diets are rich in the things we should be taking to provide all round health, and as such there are now a number of different vitamin supplements to aid eye health on the market.

They usually contain the recommended daily amount of minerals and vitamins you would normally find in a general multivitamin, along with those which are just for eye health. It is not usually necessary to take any other multivitamin supplements.

Research has shown these nutrients are not a cure for AMD, nor will they restore vision already lost from the disease. But, they could be a key to helping people at risk of developing advanced AMD keep their vision.
